Schools all over the UK are being hit by budget cuts. This will affect the quality of the environment and the educational standards that our children receive. Through partnerships with London's Corporate Community there is an opportunity to help schools to deliver a high quality low carbon learning environment for children, keep school running costs down and meet our collective commitments on climate change.

Tell us what you think. Can the private sector help improve energy efficiency in schools? Complete our 3 minute Green School Giving Survey

Our objective is to secure corporate sponsorship that can be used to implement effeciency improvement in London schools, delivering long-lasting energy savings and carbon emisions reductions as part of a 'carbon-balancing" initiative. In turn we aim to stimulate a wider discussion around the potential of private sector financing to improve school building stock. In mid November, participants will be invited to share their views at a high profile event in London alongside organisations to take this forward. Read more >>

Who is behind the project?

Green School Giving is the brainchild of an MBA cohort from the University of East Anglia. The group, with professional backgrounds ranging from energy and sustainability to procurement and education, are engaged in the world’s first Strategic Carbon Management MBA, based at UEA’s London campus.

The group has shared values that converge around responsible business, education and environmental awareness. The concept for Green School Giving has emerged as an expression of those values; creating a valuable opportunity for the Capital’s responsible businesses to demonstrate corporate citizenship through a contribution to climate change mitigation that will help improve the education of London’s children.

The initiative has begun as a challenge to stimulate debate on funding to overcome the barriers to energy efficiency. Ultimately the aim is to raise funding for the pilot programme; making a contribution to sustainability in the capital and opening dialogue on future opportunities.

The MBA cohort have partnered with the London Borough of Merton for this pilot, where funds raised will be deployed to improve the energy efficiency of schools within the borough. Merton Council regards tackling climate change as a ‘must do’ imperative for the sake of future generations and has a track record of low carbon investment and innovation. As the originators of the ‘Merton Rule’ the council has influenced national planning policy; requiring new developments to generate at least 10% of their energy needs from on-site renewable energy equipment.

This initiative is delivered by the Strategic Carbon Management MBA London 2012 Cohort, in partnership with Merton Council. As part of the course requirements, executive students are required to undertake a ‘challenge’ that must meet three criteria; raise the profile of the carbon agenda, raise money for a chosen partner and coordinate a successful event.
